Midwifery Science (B.Sc.), dual
Bachelor of Science
Features of the degree program Midwifery Science
In addition to the existing degree program Midwifery B.Sc., which builds on training at a cooperating midwifery school, Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences will be offering a new, dual degree program qualifying midwives from the winter semester 2020/2021.
Behind this initiative are changes in the legislation governing the professions, which make dual courses of study the standard education for midwives.
The new, dual program combines academic studies at the University with accompanied practical periods. Upon completion, students are allowed to use the professional title midwife and receive a Bachelor’s degree. The degree program is developed based on the new occupational laws – the Hebammenreformgesetz (HebRefG) and the Studien- und Prüfungsverordnung für Hebammen (HebStPrV). Both are expected to be passed in autumn 2019 and come into force in January 2020.
The dual degree program for midwives is planned as a seven-semester course and consists of a professional practice and a university part. It will integrate the minimum number of 4,600 hours required by law to be professionally licensed as a midwife. In this respect, the University will take overall responsibility in cooperation with the (preferably regional) practice organizations.
The exact application procedures, cooperating practice partners and the detailed structure of the new degree program are currently under development. Further information will be made successively available on this website. The new, dual degree program for midwives aims to convey the professional and personal competences required for working as a midwife in inpatient and outpatient settings in a self-responsible, comprehensive manner. The program integrates scientific methods and practical orientation in order to prepare the future midwifes for their activity as professionals for the life phases of pregnancy, childbirth, puerperium, breastfeeding and early parenthood.
Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences aims to establish a high-quality education of midwives, which closely integrates theory and practice. For this purpose, it will bring its many years of teaching and research expertise in the sector of midwifery to the new academic education pathway.
Transitionally, a vocational training as a midwife with a supplementary Bachelor’s degree is still possible
For a limited time, the new law allows completing a vocational training as a midwife. The degree program Midwifery B.Sc., which builds on training at one of the cooperating midwifery schools and which is also open to registered midwives, is still being offered by Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences.
