Diversity Discourses
Aims and work programme
Aims of the project
Managing ethnic and cultural diversity efficiently and fairly is a central task for European societies. While business and politics increasingly rely on social science findings, the participation of German humanities and social science researchers in public discourses on migration is considered low and their impact limited (Goebel, 2021a; Treibel, 2018). Social reflection on scientific findings is relatively rare and includes comparatively few, polarized perspectives (Niehr, 2020). This project therefore aims to establish an innovative combination of formats that will generate contributions for a common, fair and efficient construction of migration and equal opportunities, taking into account inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives.
The aims of this project are:
- to produce a science-based, interdisciplinary summary of the current state of research on migration and equal opportunities in Germany,
- to reflect on and discuss this state of research from a transdisciplinary perspective in a kick-off and final event as well as in a series of discussion rounds, and
- to implement and disseminate the collected results in an impulse paper and via social media.
Work programme
The project is scheduled to last 15 months and is divided into the following six work packages.
Work package 1 (3 months) includes the preparation, implementation and follow-up of the kick-off event. The results will comprise the recording of the discussion, the development of a complementary framework concept for the subsequent discussion rounds, and the sensitization of the participants and the audience.
Work package 2 (3 months) includes literature research on basic knowledge, current challenges and solutions in the field of migration and equal opportunities and the development of articles and social media posts on migration discourses.
Work package 3 (8 months) includes the planning, implementation and analysis of six online discussion rounds, which will take place approximately once a month and in which the current state of research will be reflected. The results will be used to derive recommendations for science communication.
Work package 4 (3 months) includes the preparation, implementation and follow-up of the final event. The results will be published on the project website, the participants will be networked and stakeholders in the public debate will be sensitized.
Work package 5 (15 months) includes the publication of the project results. This includes, for example, a summary of the current state of research, posts on social media, making the events available to the public, and an impulse paper (open access) with recommendations for action.
Work package 6 (15 months) includes the cross-cutting tasks of project controlling, promotion of young researchers and project coordination. The project management involves employees and students in the research activities in order to promote young researchers.
